Using Gel Water Beads In New Products

by Alyce Powell

Before gel water beads companies used various types of cloth and fluff to absorb water in all sorts of places and products. One of the most common and maybe the most well known would be the diapers people put on their babies. When the child goes to the bathroom, something needs to absorb the liquid and in the past it was anything fluffy or spongy.

These beads were first discovered when the USDA was experimenting with ways to conserve water within soils to help farmers during periods of drought or other times when liquids were scarce. What they discovered was a certain material that when made a certain way was able to absorb more than eleven times its own mass in liquid.

The things were made from a super absorbent polymer and they are really absorbent. The old way that diapers were manufactured called for cotton and other such products to be stuffed in the lining and when it came into contact with liquid that cotton would grow about 5 times its mass. However great that was at the time, they were not that solid.

What that meant was whenever they were full of liquid, if you added any more they would either leak themselves or completely loss their absorbency and you would get liquid everywhere. This was not the case with the polymers. They would retain their water not matter how much more was made to come in contact with them.

They are also used in gardening too. Basically anything that has to do with storing liquids or sucking it up. The various uses are amazing when you come to think about it. Look at diapers for example. Before these gels diapers could only hold about 5 times their weight in liquids. Today, because of these products they can hold a little more than eleven times their weight in liquids.

This style of diaper lasted for a very long time. Actually, some of the manufacturers are still producing diapers like this even though there is a better way today. After the super absorbent polymers were discovered it was thought to use them inside the diaper and see how well they would work at absorbing the liquids expelled by a child.

Fire retardant materials and chemicals were made that would not harm the people wearing or using them and new ways were discovered to bring liquid to those who needed it without having to worry about losing it. It was used in various toys that could grow in liquids from small beans to very large dinosaurs. It was amazing the amount of products that came from this one invention.

Gel water beads changed all sorts of industries around the world. The farming industry as well finally got a new way to store more water than ever before also. The discovery of this product was a sure industry changer and a sign of just how good a new invention could change the world if it is done properly everywhere.
